This is normal and you will need to attempt to sign in even though there is a red X by your username. Before you attempt to sign in please make sure you are connected to the internet.
If the sign in fails then you will need to have your partner sign in, do a full re-sync of resources (Settings/Sync All Resources) and log out. After the iPad has been updated then you should be able to successfully sign in.
